What does MAK normally do for the development of Mising language and literature ?
» To begin with, the MAK took up the question of a suitable script for the Mising language, as it was pre-requisite for preserving and developing the language in a written form. After a series of seminars and discussions, it decided finally to adopt the roman system of writing for the language with extensive modification in the light of phonetic science and graphology vis-a-vis the phonemics of Mising. The choice was based on the strictly alphabetic character of the roman system of writing, being generally free from conjuncts or ligatures and fully conducive to linear composition according to the sequence of sounds. The modification included the basic grouping of sounds into vowels and consonants, as done in Indian writing systems, and the omission of the letters that are redundant in the context of Mising phonology.
» After the question of a script for the language was decided, MAK launched publications of books and periodicals written in Mising as well as on Mising language, literature, culture, etc., beginning with the publication of primers. In the
process, MAK succeeded in creating awareness amongst the people of community about the need for the preservation and the development of their mother tongue in a written form. This awareness has resulted in the publication of a substantial number of different kinds of written materials in Mising. Presently, MAK is also extending cooperation to the education department of the government of Assam in preparing Mising primers for use in schools, where Mising Language Teaching (MLT) has been introduced.
» MAK, simultaneously, took up with the government of Assam the question of introduction of MLT in the primary schools located in Mising villages, and in 1985, the government agreed to introduce MLT in the primary schools located in Mising villages in a phased manner. The process of actual introduction began in 1986, and the new policy was implemented in 100 primary schools to start with. 130 more primary schools were covered under the policy in the subsequent period, a total of 230 primary schools thus being covered under the policy so far. However, MAK has been demanding the introduction of MLT in at least 1221 more primary schools, where all the students belong to the Mising community. As the language has been being taught in the schools concerned in classes III and IV only, MAK has been urging upo n the government to introduce MLT right from class I and gradually cover the entire elementary stage. The question of making Mising the medium of instruction in the schools concerned is under the consideration of MAK.
» Holding biennial general conferences and annual special sessions to review existing policies and programmes of the organization and lay down, if necessary, new policies and programmes for carrying on and intensifying its efforts for the development of the language.
» Cooperation with other socio-cultural organizations of the Mising community, as and when necessary, for the development of the community.
